The Brahmins of the Kovilakam were once the rulers of Airanikulam Village. At the zenith of its fame and glory, it was the most preferred haunt for many notable personalities in the cultural and literary scenario of Kerala. Hence from the historical and architectural point of view, the Kovilakam connects us to the mythical times of History. As per legends, the Kovilakam is also associated to Akavoor Chathan, one among the twelve children of "Parayi" in the ancestral folklore, "Parayi Petta Panthirukulam”. Akavoor Chathan and Akavoor Namboothirippad of the Kovilakam are believed to be the reason behind the formation of “Thiruvairanikkulam Temple”, one of the most famous Siva- Parvathy Temples in South India. The temple is located very near to the Kovilakam.
